Swimming & Water Safety

Cowes Primary School offers a comprehensive swimming and water safety program for all students from Prep to year 6. This is an intensive program with all students swimming one week on and one week off. During their swimming week the students swim every day. The program runs throughout term 1 and part of term 4.

The program aim to promote water confidence through the development of all stroke techniques including freestyle, backstroke, breastroke, butterfly, survival backstroke and sidestroke. The students also learn about water safety for all aquatic environments such as pools, beaches, rivers, dams and around the home. This includes safe entries, self-preservation, using rescue aides, PFDs and safety in boats.

In first term the senior school (3-6) have a whole school swimming carnival for all students. There are a variety of races to cater for various ability levels. Students from this carnival can also qualify to represent the school at District, Division, Regional and State events. The junior school (P-2) also hold a swimming carnival each year for all students with the emphasis on participation and fun.

The swimming permission note is required before your child can use the pool.

Clothing Requirements for Swimming

For swimming, please make sure that clothing worn on swimming days is easy to take o ff and put on, and that long hair is tied back.

It is also compulsory for children to wear a t-shirt or rash vest in the pool.  A plastic bag should be provided for wet clothing.  Swimming caps should be worn, especially for those with long hair.  This prevents our pool filters becoming blocked. Swimming caps (in house colours) and goggles are available for purchase from the office.
